Aleya lights are commonly known as marsh ghost lights in West Bengal and are the unexplainable ghost lights observed in the marshes mostly by the local fishermen. These lights often confuse fishermen and cause them to lose their bearing. Many fishermen drown in the river while following these lights moving over the marshes. Locals believe that these strange hovering marsh-lights are in fact ghost-lights of the haunted souls of the fisherman who died while fishing in the river. Sometimes aleya lights help fishermen avoid future dangers.

Jatinga village has a population of around 2500 and is widely popular for its unexplained phenomenon of bird suicides. Many migratory birds visiting the area can never leave the village, dropping dead for no solid reason on the streets. The case gets even more creepy as these birds always face their death between 06:00 p.m. to 09:30 p.m. on the moonless nights of September and October.

These mass suicides only occur on a specific 1 mile by 600 feet strip of land. This is said to have occurred year after year without a break for more than a century. Scientists offered many theories to explain this phenomenon, the most popular one being that these birds are attracted towards village lights which later confuse them, along with many others.

None of them have yet been able to prove any of the theories behind this phenomenon, though, which is why it continues to haunt and intrigue the minds of the residents and travellers just the same.
